Catherine Hill Artisan Market

The St Catherine's Artisan Market was the brainchild of Frome businessman Gavin Eddy and Allison Herbert, who have been overwhelmed by its success.

The idea of establishing an outdoor market on a steep, narrow and cobbled hill was a brave one but at one stage the monthly event – held during the summer – attracted more than 2,000 people in four hours, all meandering around the 40 stalls and the businesses already on the hill.

Gavin, who originated from London, modelled the Frome market on the ancient Columbia Road flower market in east London.

He said: "We wanted to establish the Catherine Hill, Stoney Street and Palmer Street area as a destination in its own right.

"With the regeneration of Saxon Vale there was a risk that this area of Frome could become more polarised. By establishing an event that attracted people specifically to the hill, we thought would hopefully help everyone."

The result has been the creation of St Catherine Market Ltd, a non-profit making company whose motives are altruistic and aims to eventually channel any money made back into the community. For more information contact the new Artisan Market Manager - Charlie Thomas - www.stcatherinesfrome.co.uk
